Today we had Geography. Our teacher shared with us some of the things we are expected to learn in Year 2.

Today we focused on maps. We looked at a map of Jon Mills’s work around Brighton and Hove that he kindly made for us.

We looked at different maps of Brighton too, even ones from a very long time ago when Brighton was still very small and had a different name. We looked at the landscape and thought about the physical (natural) and human (man-made) features. The sea, the hill in Hollingdean and the Downs are examples of physical features. The pier, the roads and parks are human features. You can show these on a map by using little symbols. We then thought about how we could use little symbols on the map to show where Jon Mills work is. Some children thought it should be a symbol for metal or maybe a train or even Mr Watt.

We all made maps of our area and we designed symbols and a key to go with it.
